42nd St Between 9th Ave and 10th Ave
Venturing further west than most tourists or commuters go (without being in a bus), this stretch of 42nd Street sheds itself of the glowing veneer of Times Square for a miss-matched combination of construction and industry. Most of the traffic on this block is courtesy of the Lincoln Tunnel which has one of its many off-ramp streets (Dyer Ave) feeding into the middle of this street. The north side of the block has some apartments and restaurants before the instantly recognizable Park & Lock garage comes into view. You've seen this two-story building before if you've exited the tunnel going north at night (by car, or bus) and seen its neon lights glowing from 42nd Street.
While the east end of the street is in a slight state of disrepair (recently the Papaya Dog on the corner closed...leaving a big, yellow gap) things level out a bit by the time you get to 10th Avenue - with a combination of high-rises and tenements.
