81st St Between 1st Ave and York Ave

Bookended by two eateries – Gracie Mews Diner on the west and Yuko on the east – this is mainly a residential block. A lot of the apartments seem to be from within the past 20 or 30 years, with a handful of older ones thrown in for good measure.

Going this close to the edge of the island (in any direction) and you generally get a sense of things winding down.  Once you get past 2nd Ave, there's a considerable drop-off in the number of bars and such. More and more it becomes just high-rise apartment buildings, all clamoring for the same views of Queens or Roosevelt Island.

Is that really a grey and white Do Not Enter sign? The photo looks black and white at first glance.
