54th St Between Park Ave and Lexington Ave

Though this block has a handful of nice features, the overall droll atmosphere of midtown is overwhelming. Surrounding by towering structures like the CitiGroup Center, this street sits in shadow, enveloped in gray stone.

As a designer, I've encountered an interesting side effect to drab stretches of street such as this one – It makes what few colors are present really pop. The red fire hydrant, the yellow pillar, the blue New York Times box; they all stand out against the neutral tones of the block.

I guess the moral is to find whatever joy you can on whatever block you happen to find yourself – even if it's a soul-crushing one such as this.
