40th St Between 8th Ave and 9th Ave
The Port Authority is often on the receiving end of many complaints – ranging from the aesthetic, to the cleanliness, to the traffic...and that's talking about the front! Walk around to the 40th Street side (the structure leaps over 41st) and you'll be greeted with a stretch of street even bleaker than the one found two blocks to the north.
With the endless, industrial facade of the bus terminal reaching as far as you can see, the only notes of character or commerce are on the opposite side of the street. However, being the hotbed of noise and pollution that it is, all you're likely to find is porn shops and liquor stores. The 9th Avenue side of things brighten up a bit, with a pizza joint and some other businesses, however they're still weighed down by the massive over- and under-passes feeding into the Lincoln Tunnel.
