The Bowery Between Houston St and Bond St
An area once known for it's shadiness, underground rock clubs, and dive bars, The Bowery is now home to glass-clad condos, Whole Foods, and newly-paved streets. Perhaps the starkest change is in the middle of this stretch when you come to the unassuming storefront of John Varvatos – previously home to the infamous CBGB's. There seems to be a slight nod to the previous tenant in the shape of the awning, but not much else. Right next door you'll find the Morrison Hotel, a "Fine Art Music Photography" Gallery – previously home to CB's Gallery. Now, practically devoid of character in comparison to just a few years ago, the dead-end street doesn't even retain the "Rock Salute" crosswalk sign which used to invite fans as they crossed the street to the venue.
Across the street you can still find many of the small bars that have been there for a while, but without the anchor that was CBGB's, it simply isn't the same block it used to be.
The Bowery is a pretty wide street, so you can get a rather clear view of your surroundings – which for the most part consists of low-rise buildings and the occasional glass curtain. Something you can't see from this block directly, but it's just down the way, on Houston is the tribute mural to Keith Haring. In a rare instance of perfect timing for this blog, the mural was literally whitewashed over yesterday. So enjoy the photo I got (or the numerous others on the internet) 'cuz it ain't there no more.
