3rd Ave Between 54th St and 56th St

Surrounded by the towering, unique shapes of both the Lipstick Building and CitiGroup Center, this wide stretch of 3rd Avenue has plenty to look up at.

The gloomy day I visited didn't help the mood around here. Though there are plenty of businesses and foot traffic, there's a certain depressing feeling around here. I'd attribute it to simply "midtown", but if you go only a few blocks east, that feeling subsides.

The Franklin D. Roosevelt USPS Station sits as an interesting, endless wall on the east side of the street. That makes for a nice lineup of different things (this post office, the FDR Drive, and Roosevelt Island) all named after the 32nd President.

I used to work on this block. Depressing doesn't begin to cover it. But there was a nice pub across the street where, when the Yankees had a day game, would would drown our sorrows in a liquid lunch.
