72nd St Between York Ave and FDR Dr

Starting off down this block, I didn't expect much. With a humble apartment building on the north and Sotheby's on the south, the rest of the street seemed to only be comprised of some mid-rise buildings, parking garages, and a dead end turnaround.

However, once you get over the slight crest in the middle, you'll start to see some really interesting things. A public space on the north side greets you with some tables and a waterfall, while the end of the block opens up into some great views of Roosevelt Island – complete with plenty of places to sit.

Even the apartments (or perhaps they're town houses) at the end of the block gain some character...they look like something straight out of London. It's not unusual for these dead end blocks on the edge of the island to hide some pretty interesting features. It's certainly a nice change from the monotony of midtown.

I'm reading "George, Being George," an oral history of George Plimpton, and just came across a photo of his "famous" apartment building, 541 E. 72nd. It's in b/w, so there's no red door, but I thought, "MAN, that looks familiar. . . "

So I came back here to check and, lo and behold, that's where I first saw it!

Keep up the great work.
