45th St Between Lexington Ave and Vanderbilt Ave

In many ways, 45th Street has a lot in common with 42nd Street. Both get to pass by the Grand Central Terminal / MetLife Building megablock without interruption (unlike 43rd and 44th which are stopped dead in their tracks). They're also the only two streets which the Park Avenue Viaduct leaps directly over. However, unlike 42nd Street, 45th is a quieter, more hidden block populated mostly be midtown lunchers trying to get in or out of Grand Central. The surrounding buildings all seem to have public spaces of some sort which in-turn house a number of restaurants and shops.

On the Lexington Avenue corner is a large Post Office known as Grand Central Station (Grand Central Terminal is the proper name for the train depot). A series of narrow passageways between the MetLife Building and the Post Office allow for loading and unloading of mail trucks. The large open plaza beneath the MetLife Building (formerly PanAm) is a popular smoker hangout despite the numerous No Smoking signs.
