6th Ave Between 35th St and 32nd St

Walking around or near Herald Square is a dangerous choice for any New Yorker. While not nearly as maddening as Times Square, many of the same irritants that exist 10 blocks to the north can be found here as well – just on a smaller scale. Much how Times Square is named for the New York Times, Herald Square was named for the New York Herald-Tribune, though that publication has long-since folded. Thanks to the city's inexplicable need to close off large sections of Broadway so it can be paved with stucco and littered with card tables, the space with which a pedestrian can walk around here is pretty generous.

All around shopping is the center of attention. Of course Macy's steals the show with its classic city block-sized anchor store (though rumor is it will be getting a facelift over the next few years), but the Manhattan Mall (with its newly-installed JCPenny) and the Gap all hold their own.

You can't walk too far along this stretch without tripping over a Subway or PATH train stairwell – yet another reason why the neighborhood is so terribly crowded. Thanks to the aforementioned street arrangement, vehicles seem absolutely lost when they enter the square. For example, cars going west on 33rd St are forced to make an abrupt turn south, lest they interrupt the all-holy pedestrian boulevard.
