40th St Between Lexington Ave and Park Ave

I can't claim too much knowledge regarding real estate law, but if I didn't know any better I would say midtown has no zoning laws whatsoever. What else could explain the seemingly random assortment of buildings, open spaces and alleys? This is a very typical midtown block insomuch that during the week it's full of office lunchers and devoid of tourists. While you could argue that the presence of some hotels and its proximity to the NY Public Library and Grand Central make it a perfectly suitable place for visitors, the truth is it's a narrow block which even a local wouldn't necessarily think to stroll down.

The western half of the block is home to 101 Park Avenue, which despite its overwhelming height and glassy 80's sheen, is nicely offset by the large, leveled plaza on the corner of Park and 40th. Surrounded by inset bronze plaques celebrating nearby buildings, the property is a rare respite from the typically staid midtown faire.
